MT. BLUE SKY SCENIC BYWAY 🏔️
The tallest paved road in America, right here in Colorado! This narrow road frequently makes the list of “scariest drives” but the payoff is worth trekking through these 14 miles of views and sights.
🌲 Visit the Mount Goliath Nature Center to learn about how plants and animals survive at these altitudes, but also for a great little nature walk as well.
🎟️ Reserve a timed entry spot to go up the mountain! There are typically plenty of spots available, but the times entry helps manage parking at the summit and keeps the roadway from getting too clogged. The road is very narrow and can't handle too many cars safely!
🚗 From the welcome center to the summit is only 14 miles, but the drive is slow so don’t count on moving at highway speeds.
💦 This is a 14er so drink plenty of water BEFORE you head up, to avoid altitude sickness.
🚽 Bathrooms are limited but there are a few stops along the way, including at the summit.
🚙 Parking is limited at the top, so be patient! Most people don’t stay forever at the top since the air is so thin.
❄️ Even during hot months like July and August it can snow at the summit, so bring warm clothes!
The top includes a small old “castle” which is less a visitors center and more like old ruins. The kids loved running around and exploring the spot, which provides some great lookout spots 👀
From the parking lot you can keep walking up to the tippy top, which is a small halfish mile stroll uphill (my kids both did it).
